Tabor Academy & St. Sebastians face off to honor Travis Roy

MARION — Travis Roy still has a soft spot for his alma mater, Tabor Academy.

A former Seawolf, Roy was the man of the hour February 4 for the 16th annual Travis Roy Cup hockey matchup between Tabor and the St. Sebastian Arrows, held inside the Travis Roy Arena.

Coming back to Tabor, though, can be bittersweet, Roy said.

“When I was here I was able-body and had the whole world ahead of me,” he said. “I can still remember that.”

In May 1995 Roy graduated from Tabor and headed to Boston University on a hockey scholarship. Just five months later, Roy slid headfirst into the boards during a matchup against the University of North Dakota, cracking his fourth and fifth vertebra.

Since his accident, Roy has spent the last 16 years traveling across New England as a motivational speaker and generating donations for the “Travis Roy Foundation.” Roy created the foundation in 1997, which has since generated over $2.5 million for spinal cord injury research.

Roy said the Travis Roy Cup rivalry between Tabor and St. Sebastian’s School in Needham began with the coaches and athletic directors. The coaches from both schools thought an annual game would make for both a great hockey game and fundraiser he said.

Travis Roy is a great speaker, and I have been lucky to have the chance to hear him speak at my school. If you can, please visit his foundation HERE and help to support his cause. Thanks!

Did Tabor join the Ivy League?

From WickedLocal.com

10/21/2011
Culminating months of speculation and anticipation, the Tabor Academy Board of Trustees has named a new headmaster to the Ivy League private college preparatory school.
John H. Quirk Jr., a long-time Brooks School administrator, was selected to succeed Jay Stroud, who served as Tabor Academy’s headmaster for 22 years. Stroud will retire in June of 2012. Quirk starts his new position on July 1, 2012. He was officially named as “Head of School” on Oct. 15.
Quirk has spend the past 25 years of his professional career at the Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts, serving in a variety of positions. His most recent position was as Associate Head of School Affairs. He also served as Dean of Students and Afternoon Programs, Co-Dean of Students, Coordinator of School Exchange Programs, and as instructor of Greek and Latin.
He also served 21 years as a dorm parent, and coached three varsity sports.  He’s plays guitar in the faculty band at Brooks. For full article, click here

We have blogged about the outgoing Tabor Academy Head of School in the past. Mr. Stroud was pretty boss, doing the Dougie and diving into the ocean with his graduating seniors. Now it seems like Tabor has really hit the big time. According to the article above, they have joined the Ivy League!

Harvard, Yale, Princeton…Tabor?

Outgoing Tabor Academy headmaster learning how to Dougie

Awesomeness. Love this guy. Check out his graduation leap in our archives. If I were an incoming freshman at Tabor, I would be bummed that he was retiring.

Tabor Academy looking for a new headmaster

Jay Stroud, 67, headmaster of Tabor Academy for the past 23 years, announced his retirement, effective next June 30. A search committee has begun hunting for a successor, and Stroud said a new headmaster would be in place by this fall. He is the eighth headmaster in the private prep school’s 135-year history. In a letter to alumni, Stroud said that during his tenure, more than 3,000 students have been in his charge and he pointed to the accomplishments of the school in that time, calling it a “team effort” that included building or renovating entities such as the Fish Center, marine science lab, and math/science center. – Paul Kandarian/Boston Globe 7/31/2011

Tabor…great prep school. Amazing campus on Sippican Harbor. A notable Tabor alumnus is former BU hockey player and current inspiring speaker, Travis Roy.

Judging from this video, the next headmaster at Tabor has some pretty big shoes to fill. Good luck Mr. Stroud.
