Belmont Hill & Nobles prep hockey rivals now stars at Princeton

From Boston.com/Marvin Pave

1/22/2012

Mike Condon and Derrick Pallis are best of friends now, Princeton University teammates focused on trying to keep the puck out of the net for the men’s hockey squad.

Condon, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior goalie from Needham, shares time in goal with sophomore Sean Bonar.

A 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior defenseman from Medfield, Pallis anchors the blue line for the Tigers.

The two were rivals in the Independent School League, with Condon tending goal for Belmont Hill School while Pallis suited up for Noble & Greenough School in Dedham. They went head-to-head four times, with Belmont Hill winning three, according to Condon.

“We’re always chirping at each other, sometimes about our private school days, but in a respectful way,’’ said Condon, who helped Princeton complete a 1-0-1 weekend with 27 saves in a 3-3 tie against ninth-ranked Cornell last Saturday night.

Nobles and Belmont Hill represent some of New England’s  prep school hockey at it’s finest. Lots of players from both schools have gone on to play DI or DIII college hockey, and there are a few NHL players or alumni from both schools.

This would be more of a story of it were Nobles and Milton grads, but it’s a good story anyways. Nobles’ biggest rival is Milton, and not Belmont Hill. St. Seb’s hates Belmont Hill. In fact, when I toured St. Seb’s, they told me that it was a requirement that you do your best to beat Belmont Hill whenever possible.

Nobles v. Belmont Hill would make a pretty good Frozen Fenway matchup. Both teams are battling to get up in the standings in the Keller division of the ISL. A lot of people thought that Nobles would be better this year, but they lost a few really good players to graduation and to juniors.

Which colleges are the most prep?

Well, according to the Huffington Post, here is the list:

  1. University of Virginia
  2. University of the South (Suwanee)
  3. Miami of Ohio
  4. College of Charleston
  5. Davidson
  6. St. Lawrence
  7. Bowdoin
  8. Claremont McKenna

The author at Huffington Post must have gotten lazy or fallen asleep and just decided to submit the list with eight schools. Why not go to ten? We all know that there are a lot more preppie colleges. So, it’s time to vote on which two schools should be added to the list. There are a lot of choices. Vanderbilt? Elon? Trinity? Princeton? Ole Miss? You pick your favorite or write in another choice.
