And the celebrity prep school grad of the week is…

…Lana Del Rey of the Kent School.

Who is Lana Del Rey? I asked myself the same question because I  am probably not her demographic. I’m a prep, not a hipster. I watched a few of her videos and she has a decent voice. Kind of an American Amy Winehouse, but a lot less dead.

Del Rey went to the Kent School in CT at age 14 because her parents wanted her to quit drinking. From her GQ article:

While dispelling rumours of her past put to her by the interviewer, Del Rey revealed that her parents sent her to Kent school, a strict boarding school in Connecticut, at the age of 14 to help kick her drinking habit.

She said: “I was a big drinker at the time. I would drink every day. I would drink alone. I thought the whole concept was so f-ing cool. A great deal of what I wrote on ‘Born To Die’ is about these wilderness years.

“My parents were worried, I was worried. I knew it was a problem when I liked it more than I liked doing anything else. I was like, ‘I’m f-ed. I am totally f-ed’.”

This is definitely the first time I heard of someone whose parents sent them to boarding school and expected them to quit drinking.

“Ted” is the #1 movie in the country

We have already featured Seth MacFarlane of the Kent School as a celebrity prep school grad of the week. MacFarlane graduated from Kent and then went on to RISD. In researching him and the movie “Ted,” we found out that the headmaster of Kent actually led a campaign against Seth MacFarlane and “Family Guy.”

If you check out Wikipedia, there’s a link to a story that says:

“Seth MacFarlane has been out of prep school for eight years, but the headmaster is still on his case. The top administrator of the Kent School is leading a one-man campaign to get advertisers to drop “The Family Guy,” an animated TV comedy created by MacFarlane, a 1991 Kent alumnus.”

I would say that MacFarlane has won that battle.

As for “Ted,” let me just say that I saw it this weekend and I need to see it again, as everyone was laughing so hard that I missed probably half of the movie’s lines.
