the men of the sea

It had been quite some time since I had gone through my T&V email. Sifting through junk mail and spam offers from that oafish brand chubbies, I  found a diamond in the rough when I received an email from Zeke, a student at BB&N. Zeke is the representative of a clothing line called “men of the sea.” What Zeke brought to my attention was not only another clever example of prep school students swimming against the current, but also another story of a prep school administration oppressing its students and their freedom of expression.

The story Zeke shared with me begins in the bitter cold month of February on campus. BB&N advertises their dress code as being the 6 B’s (no boobs, back, butt, belly, bra, or boxers). So, surely no students would have been bold enough to have violated these rules. However, shortly after launching his company with his brother, Zeke was called into the Dean’s office. Throughout the school day, the men of the sea had been selling inventory to their classmates. Like a tidal wave, the students of BB&N flooded the campus showcasing their new favorite brand. Coming from the student body, this was a sign of support for their classmates and good taste in an up-and-coming preppy brand. Apparently, some opposed the brand. One could suppose that some students or faculty may have even been looking for an excuse to get Zeke in trouble. But, that is neither here, nor there.

In the office, the Dean explained to Zeke how he thought the brand was inappropriate because some students had complained to him that they were offensive. Countering the Dean, Zeke argued that the logo could not be deemed inappropriate since sperm is a subject of discussion in mandatory biology and sex-ed coursework. Additionally, BB&N had hosted assemblies on sex and healthy relationships. [Side note: assemblies like these are often used by pubescent preps to make witty sexual wisecracks and are hardly productive educational platforms. Unless of course, you decide to ask the sex-ed expert about the theoretical possibility for a couple to execute the Nantucket Sleigh Ride.]

Zeke told me this: “To me, this knee-jerk reaction of labeling something you may not particularly like as ‘offensive’ is a disgusting behavior. I questioned whether I could come to him and say a Nike logo was offensive to me and that I wanted Nike banned from the school. He didn’t have a good answer to this other than that it was his judgement call. Sounds pretty tyrannical.” This logic is socially relevant in the war on political correctness today which is one of the reasons why we champion freedom fighters like the men of the sea.

By March, The Vanguard, a student-run newspaper at BB&N had interviewed Zeke and his brother. An article was composed profiling the boys, their brand, and the administration’s choice to abolish it from campus. According to Zeke, “To further assert the administration’s tyranny and hindering of freedom of expression and speech, the administration did not allow the article to be published.”

Our staff does not agree with many policies made by prep school administrations these days. For example, when The Boss was a senior, he was forced to take down a video of the headmaster breaking up a staged lucha libre fight on halloween or face the threat of expulsion. We want to know your opinion. Should the brand have been banished from campus? Has it been banished from your campus? What do you think?

And the celebrity prep school grad of the week is…

…Peyton Manning of the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, LA.

Living about 15 minutes from the home of the 3-time Superbowl Champion New England Patriots, we don’t like Peyton Manning. That all changed when I saw on Yahoo! this morning that Peyton is supporting Mitt Romney for President. Go Broncos!

Isidore Newman is a K-12 prep school in New Orleans, established in 1903

Let’s get a prep school poll. Based on your opinion, who will win the Prep School Death Match–I mean, Presidential Debate tonight?

Check out the #5 reason to vote for Obama, per Snoop Dogg

From TMZ.com

Snoop Dogg reposted a “Why I’m Not Voting for Romney” list on his Instagram page … which is totally blowing up … and it includes reasons like, “He’s a white n**ga” … and “He’s a ho.”

The list — originally created by @DragonflyJonez and was reposted by Snoop yesterday — includes:

— “He is a white n**ga.”
— “He looks like he says ‘n**ga’ all the time”
— “He always interrupts and talks over people like he’s better than them. Bitch, I will beat the sh*t out of you.”
— “He’s a Mormon but he ain’t got no hoes.”

The post also includes the top 10 reasons to vote for Obama … including the fact that Michelle has a “fat ass.”

I re-read the article, and Snoop Dogg didn’t actually write the list; he only reposted it. I actually think that reason #7 to vote for Obama is the funniest. He sniffed Beyonce’s neck. He does more than that.

Philly student mocked by teacher for wearing a Romney t-shirt

From Philadelphia Inquirer

A uniform-free “dress-down” day at Charles Carroll High School in Port Richmond turned into a public dressing down for a student who chose to wear a pink T-shirt supporting Mitt Romney for president.

Samantha Pawlucy, a sophomore at Carroll, said her geometry teacher publicly humiliated her Friday by asking why she was wearing a Romney/Ryan T-shirt and going into the hallway to urge other teachers and students to mock her.

“I was really embarrassed and shocked. I didn’t think she’d go in the hallway and scream to everyone,” Pawlucy said. “It wasn’t scary, but it felt weird.”

Pawlucy said she decided to wear the shirt after researching the candidate and President Obama and concluding that she was a Romney supporter. Her father, Richard, said she was especially interested in Romney’s opposition to late-term abortion.

He said he recently registered to vote as an independent but was not involved in the Romney campaign.

Samantha Pawlucy said that after going into the hall, her teacher called into the classroom a nonteaching assistant who tried to write on the T-shirt with a marker. She allegedly told the teen to remove her shirt and said she would be given another.

Pawlucy said her teacher told her that Carroll was a “Democratic school” and that wearing a Republican shirt was akin to the teacher, who is black, wearing a KKK shirt.

The teacher could not be reached for comment. Fernando Gallard, spokesman for the School District of Philadelphia, said an investigation was ongoing. He said the student had the right to wear the T-shirt.

The teacher said that it was a “Democratic school?” Welcome to my life. PC Central.

Leave Clint Eastwood alone

I love Clint Eastwood.  In fact, one of my favorite movies is “Kelly’s Heroes.”

Clint is an American icon, and he is supporting Mitt Romney for President. Last week, Clint gave a speech at the RNC that was a little bit weird. The guy has made some of the best movies in the history of film and now he’s getting made fun of on Twitter and other social media outlets. Do everyone a favor and just leave Clint alone.

My favorite part’s are all from “Gran Torino.”

Rate this Chicago Young Republicans “Call Me Maybe” video

Look, I wish I were 18 this fall so I could vote against Obama. After all, Obama tells me that I didn’t create this business–the government created it for me. Nevertheless, this video is painful to watch.

What do you think?

Hopefully, you already have your most American apparel ready but in case you don’t, the staff at Twines & Vines wanted to put together a patriotic apparel guide. You don’t want to end up like the Boss, who a few years ago wore a Ferrari shirt on the 4th, which unbeknownst to him had a tiny Italian flag on the neck. Prep school pranks & the election

When you Google news for “prep school,” the top result is about Mitt Romney and some pranks he played when he went to Cranbrook. The story goes that Mitt and his buddies held down a student who they thought was gay and cut his long bleached blonde hair. The student who received the haircut later got kicked out for smoking a cigarette, and he passed away back in 2004.

Nowadays, there is NO WAY that you would ever think of doing something like that. Besides, from the anti-North Carolina posts trending on FB and Twitter, most kids at our schools seem to support gay marriage.

So what do you think? It’s too late for Mitt to reach out and say sorry Billy Madison style.
