Catalina Island

As North Eastern preps rang in Memorial Day with barbecues on the Vineyard, all of us SoCal dwellers hopped on our boats and jetted off to Catalina Island for the weekend.  Many of the local yacht clubs have coves over at the island for their members to anchor/moor in.  Balboa Yacht Club in particular hosts an “Opening Day” over Memorial Day Weekend each year, signifying the official opening of the cove for the season.  While no wine mixers were attended, a fabulous time was enjoyed by all.  My family was spread across 3 boats and had at our disposal 4 paddle boards, 3 coves, 2 jet skis, and endless sun.  Saturday was spent hanging out between 2 coves (Moonstone and White’s); riding the jet skis, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, heading to shore to meet up with friends.  Sunday we headed to Avalon, the town everyone knows Catalina for.  We relaxed at the Tuna Club (the world’s oldest fishing club) for a while before hitting the bars and the Descanso Beach Club.  We left Monday afternoon, making it home just in time for the BYC barbecue.

Tie One On, A Bow Tie Tutorial

Everyone, yes everyone, should know how to tie a bow tie.  I mean, The Boss is literally a pro.

I found this great tutorial from SarahBelle93x, who is just fantastic.  I actually found her on instagram after seeing that she was in the same business as an old friend of mine, Allie Evans.   If you haven’t come across her instagram or youtube account yet, I definitely recommend checking her out!

As promised, the bow tie tutorial:

America’s Cup “Cupdate”

Those of you who have followed by articles from the beginning know that I’m definitely more of a power boater than a sailor. However, since I hostessed the Governor’s Cup last summer (more on that in the next few weeks), I have been obsessed with the America’s Cup.  This last Saturday, Balboa Yacht Club hosted an informational dinner presentation describing all of the recent updates for the regatta.  As a faithful member and A-Cup enthusiast, I obviously had to attend.

Since its start in 1851 at the World’s Fair in England, the America’s Cup Regatta has become sailing’s pinnacle event.  New York Yacht Club had held the trophy for 132 years, until 1983 when it was won by Australia.  Since then, the Cup has been won by a multitude of yacht clubs in different countries around the world, and the regatta has taken place in a countless number of locations.  This year, the regatta will be held in San Francisco, smack in the middle of the bay (practically unheard of in the world of large scale regattas).

america's cup 1

The amazing part of all of this is the fact that it will be so easy to watch.  Sure, St. Francis and Golden Gate Yacht Clubs will be amazing places to watch the regatta from, but the City of San Francisco is also currently in the midst of building an entire “America’s Cup Village” and “America’s Cup Park,” which are projected to bring in nearly $1 billion in revenue over the 4 month span of July-October.  The village will include a 9200-person stadium, which will be fantastic for the musical events that are expected to take place.  Imagine Dragons, Train, Jason Mraz… the talent is endless!

america's cup village

Not only will viewing in person be made possible, but this will also be the first time the Cup will ever be aired on a major news network!  NBC will be showing full coverage of the races, with amazing technology to make it easier to track the races.  If you’ve ever watched a football game on TV, you’ve seen the digital “1st Down Line.”  Well, sailing enthusiasts have discovered a way to use the same technology to track the routes of the competing boats, making it easier for everyone to understand the races.

america's cup 2

Another piece of exciting news–this year, the boats will change from AC45’s to AC72’s, which basically means they’ll be a whole lot bigger.  These catamarans (boats with 2 hulls) are able to foil (rise out of the water with fin-like stabilizers keeping control, as seen here) with ease and speed (Team Oracle USA reached 42-knots in February, approximately 48-mph, as seen here).  The boats have a massive 40-meter (130-foot) mast, controlled by an 11-person crew.  I have to say, Team Luna Rossa of Italy will be sailing the most aesthetically pleasing boat… I mean, they are sponsored by Prada.

If my words haven’t converted you to an A-Cup lover, let these videos do the work.  I could literally watch America’s Cup videos for hours everyday, and still never get enough.  The following is a promo from last year to get everyone excited about the regatta.  Needless to say, it succeeds.

Prep Basics for Him and Her

Spring is quickly approaching, which, as we all know, means it’s time for a wardrobe update.  As we all head off on our shopping sprees for the upcoming season, remember that one can never have too many of the following items. Yes mother, I really do need a fourth pair of TB flats!

prepbasics

1. Vineyard Vines Polo

HisFrom Classic to Slim-Fit, from Solid to Striped, from Cotton-Piqué to Jersey, Shep and Ian have all of their bases covered when it comes to their polos.

HersWith the Classic and Shoreline cuts in just about every color imaginable, picking out the perfect polo is easier than picking out what sweetener to put in your iced tea.  Which has less calories: Splenda or Equal?

2. Monograms

HisWhile girls like to monogram just about everything they own, these cuff links are a simple and subtle way to integrate the monogramming trend into any closet.

HersI consider myself a monogramoholic, living my the words of Reese Witherspoon: “If it ain’t moving, monogram it.” I’ve put my monogram on everything from totes, to cardigans, to pockets on pants… even my car! This bracelet is the perfect starting point.

3. Boat Shoes

HisHers

I cannot stress enough the importance of a good boat shoe.  Sperry has mostly resorted to outsourcing the manufacturing of the majority of their shoes; however, their “Handcrafted Original Boat Shoe by Made in Maine” (which is available for both men and women) could be the best quality boat shoe I have ever seen.  I can’t imagine walking on the bow of the boat without a pair on–they really do grip to slick surfaces.  Plus, have you seen anything more adorable than a Sperry ad?  But Daddy, I need a golden retriever to go with my new shoes!

4. Beautiful Bows

HisI hope that any prep, when confronted with the decision to choose between a neck tie and a bow tie, would choose the bow tie every time.  I always recommend an American brand that’s proud of their fun patterns–Southern Proper, Vineyard Vines, and High Cotton all make high quality bows for bros.

HersWe all love Kiel James Patrick and seriously envy Sarah Vickers.  Since she released her “Vicker’s Bow Collection” (which I also wrote about here), it has become easier to be just like our adored idol. This “Scarlett O’Hara” bow is one of my favorites.

5. The Frat Collection Frocket

His | Hers

The Frat Collection could be one of my favorite brands of all time.  If you don’t have one of their shirts yet, I highly suggest purchasing one!  Basically, you pick out a pocket (they have a ton of patterns!), the color of your shirt, and whether you want it to be long sleeve or short sleeve.  They’ve also now come out with sweatshirts, tanks, and men’s sport shirts. My favorite part?  They donate 10% of each purchase to the charity of your choice!

6. Sweet Sunnies

His | The Ray-Ban “Wayfarer” shape is probably the most iconic in sunglass history.  There is no basic more necessary, especially as the weather gets warmer.

HersAviators are great for any face shape and any outfit.  This gold color works great for blondes, like me, but if you’re looking for something darker, Ray-Ban also makes them with dark brown and black frames as well.

Preppiest Couple West of the Mississippi

Hi all! Based on my incessant habit of Instagramming (we can make it a verb, right?) this week, some of you may have picked up that my senior year Winter Formal took place last Friday, February 1st.  I guest posted for Grace from the blog Preppy on the West Coast this week and talked about everything from asking my date, to finding a location, to what everyone wore.  Click over to her blog to read all about it!

Everyone knows that the best part of a school dance is taking pictures with your date and getting to post them everywhere, so I’m taking full advantage of that.  We hired a photographer and took pictures at Balboa Yacht Club, looking over Newport Harbor. These are the results:

Lilly’s Newest Line

Lilly Pulitzer has released their newest Spring 2013 Line!  Here in Southern California, it’s somewhat tough to pull off all of the adorable patterns Lilly provides, but that doesn’t stop me from wearing the best southern prep brand on the market.  Here are my favorite pieces from the Spring Collection that can be rocked without getting wear looks from the girls in Brandy Melville (ew).

Looking Foxy

Kiel James Patrick and Sara Vickers are easily my favorite preps of all time. Everything about them makes me envious. I’ve owned quite a few pieces from the KJP line for a while now, and I think it’s time to invest in something new. These foxy friends, a part of Vickers’ Bow Collection are perfect. I can’t wait to add Swift Slyfield and Mr. Claybrook to my own personal collection!
