Coach Norm Walker
Norman Walker passed away last week. Walker coached at Wayland, Newton North and Holderness from 1966-2004. His 273 wins ranks fifth on the all-time state list behind Armond Colombo, Bill Broderick, Vito Capizzo and Ken LaChappelle.
Walker won a Class D title at Wayland and led Newton North to a pair of Super Bowl appearances. He was named Massachusetts Coach of the Year for football as well as for wrestling.
In 1984, he accepted an offer to teach at the Holderness School in Plymouth, NH. Over the course of 23 years, he coached the Holderness football team to an 83-1 record which included eight New England championships.
Holderness School created the Norman M. Walker Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to promising students, and in the fall of 2010 dedicated the football field, co-naming it the Walker-Hinman Field.
In lieu of flowers, donations to support the Norm Walker Scholarship Fund would be greatly appreciated. Donations should be sent to: Holderness School P.O., Box 1879, Plymouth, NH 03264.
Coach Walker was also 1959 graduate of Williams College, an English teacher and football coach, and father of eight children.
One of the NEPSAC football bowl games is named for Norm Walker, and last year The Rivers School faced off vs. Pingree, as both teams put their undefeated 8-0 records on the line.
